What to Consider When Snow and Ice Become Safety Concerns

Winter is here, which typically leads to questions regarding using de-icing products on turf. Ice and snow can make surfaces slippery and unsafe, especially in high-traffic areas like playgrounds, dog runs, sports fields, and residential yards. There will be situations where you may have safety concerns, and the ice needs to be addressed.

Some de-icing products can be harsh or even harmful to synthetic grass and the surrounding environment. Virtually all products will leave some residue behind after use. We prefer to avoid using de-icing agents whenever possible and allow nature to take its course. However, we understand that this isn’t always practical. When de-icing is necessary, it’s important to choose products carefully. We recommend using pet-safe de-icers that are specifically labeled as safe for pets, children, and synthetic surfaces (e.g., Safe Paw).

Here are a few guidelines for using de-icing products:

  • Apply sparingly: Use only the minimum amount needed to melt the ice.
  • Apply only in problem areas where safety is a concern. Do not treat large areas.
  • During treatment, monitor and remove the loosened/melted ice immediately. Use plastic shovels and brushes, being careful not to damage turf fibers.
  • Clean and groom the area if possible.
  • Rinse the area as soon as weather permits.

Take preventative measures by addressing any existing gutter or drainage issues in the surrounding area. Proper drainage can help reduce ice buildup before it becomes a problem. Keep snow and/or ice from building up by using a soft-bristled brush, shovel, or leaf blower before the snow can build up and turn into ice.
